Congratulations to three UNLV graduate students who received a National Love of Learning Award

Erick Lòpez recently was awarded a Love of Learning Award from The Honor Society of Phi KappaPhi. He is one of 100 recipients nationwide to receive the award during Session A of the program. Lòpez, a doctoral student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Sociology, will use funds from the award to travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to attend a research methods training titled “Health Disparities, Health Inequities and Vulnerable Populations: Research Examining and Understanding Complexity” from the world-renowned Interuniversity Consortium of Political and Social Research in conjunction with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Shelly Volsche is a Visiting Lecturer with the Academic Success Center and a doctoral candidate with the Department of Anthropology. She is currently completing her dissertation on the formation and practice of the childfree identity, including what this emergent identity can teach us about the postmodern era. She is an engaged professor who believes continuing to learn is at the core of creating community within her classroom and the broader UNLV community.

Alfonso Toro is a UNLV College of Education graduate student from Bell Gardens, California. He is a Teach for America 15 corps member and a full time 8th grade English teacher in the inner city. His passion lies in creating access for others and he believes that education is the key to opportunity. Alfonso will use the award to travel to Frankfurt, Germany and pursue German language lessons.

Project Transforming Tomorrow
The University of Nevada Las Vegas chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, in collaboration with the UNLV Graduate College, created Project Transforming Tomorrow as an after-school program aimed at providing greater access to information about higher education to high school students in the Las Vegas Valley. Initially, the program will work with one high school that has previously collaborated with UNLV’s College of Education and that has high percentages of first-generation, low-income, and/or minority students. As the program grows, additional high schools will be incorporated. The program will take place at the selected high school, and the school’s administrators and teachers will choose the first cohort of students.

UNLV Chapter 100 of Phi Kappa Phi 2017 Initiation Ceremony will be held April 18 in the SU Ballroom. Check-in 5:30 and the event will be from 6:00-7:30. Invitations through campus email are to follow.

• Keynote address by Phi Kappa Phi President, Dr. Gypsy Denzine

Gypsy M. Denzine, serves as President of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She has been actively involved in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for more than a decade. She previously chaired the Fellowship Committee and she served on the Marketing Committee. She served for six years as president of the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter at Northern Arizona University. Last year she chaired the inaugural Phi Kappa Phi Excellence in Innovation Award, which resulted in a $100,000 prize to the winning institution. Since January 2015, she has served as Dean of the College of Education and Human Services at West Virginia University. She joined West Virginia University in 2013 as Associate Provost for Community Engagement and Outreach. She is a tenured professor in the WVU Department of Learning Sciences and Human Development. Prior to joining WVU, she spent 17 years at Northern Arizona University. During her years at NAU, she served as Assistant Vice Provost of the Professional Education Unit and Dean of the College of Education. She earned a doctorate in Educational Psychology: Emphasis in Learning & Cognition from the University of Northern Colorado, a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a Bachlelor of Science degree in Social Work from St. Could State University in Minnesota. Dr. Denzine has worked professionally at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania and the University of California at Berkeley. She has conducted research in the area of college student learning and motivation, academic self-efficacy, engineering education, and faculty development in higher education. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of College Student Development and Student Affairs Journal. She has received grant funding for projects in the areas of engineering education, professional development for early childhood professionals, and educator preparation programs in rural areas. She is an avid tennis player, runner, cyclist, and hiker.
