Cheryl Tillotson, Associate Director of Advising in the College of Liberal Arts at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, represented the institution’s chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi–the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines–at the 44th Biennial Convention held July 28-30 in Atlanta, Ga.

Cheryl currently serves as Vice President of the UNLV chapter and attended the convention as the chapter’s voting delegate.

The convention brought together more than 300 attendees including chapter officers, board members, Headquarters staff and guests from across the nation. The two-day event featured a keynote address from Buck Goldstein, co-author of Engines of Innovation: The Entrepreneurial University in the 21st Century, and a plenary address from renowned leadership specialist Lou Heckler. Other highlights included a panel of three provosts discussing issues impacting higher education, presentation of the Society’s $100,000 Excellence in Innovation Award, regional meetings, chapter development trainings and elections for the 2016-2018 board of directors and regional vice presidents.

In 2014, UNLV was awarded a “Free Little Library” for winning the PKP National Book Drive. Our chapter chose the Boys and Girls Club as our recipient and delivered the library and books to them.

UNLV’s Chapter 100 will induct approximately 200 students, faculty and staff into the prestigious PKP honor society on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 6pm. Membership is by invitation and open to no more than the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty and staff are selected by nomination.

The National Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi is having a mixer for current and prospective members on March 29, 4 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 208C. If you have received a letter inviting you to join Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 100 at UNLV, this is a good time to learn more about our group, which has been designated as a Chapter of Excellence.

Shelly Volsche

Shelly Volsche is a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology. Her master’s thesis found similarities in the way childless women trained their dogs and the parenting styles of their maternal counterparts. Her current dissertation work is on the voluntarily childless (“childfree”).

UNLV’s Emily Ewing & Kaylee Thompson have won a 2015 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant, one of only 50 awarded nationwide.

Dr. Beth Rosenberg’s talk is based on her book Modernism, Immigration, and Jews: Aesthetics of the Ugly, forthcoming from Northwestern University Press in 2016. She will discuss how the “language of immigration” works within early twentieth-century debates over Jewish immigration into Britain and illustrate the parallels to current debates over immigration into the U. S. Like the language surrounding Jewish immigration, the assertions that today’s immigrants are “rapists and killers” and “anchor babies” carry metaphoric connotations that create, rather than reflect, the character of the migrant. The mixer starts at 2:30 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 3 p.m. in the Barrick Museum Auditorium.
