The UNLV chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the national’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline academic honor society, held its 2014 Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, April 15 in the Student Union Ballroom, with the reception starting at 6 p.m. UNLV’s Chapter 100 welcomed approximately 200 students, faculty and staff members into the prestigious society.

Membership is by invitation only and is open to no more than the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 100 members may wear a special medallion and honor cord at Commencement, and their membership is noted on UNLV transcripts. Nationally, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducts approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni annually. Once inducted, Phi Kappa Phi members gain a lifelong passport to a global network of academic and professional opportunities.

Donate your unwanted used/new books from any genre. All books collected will be distributed to other organizations to promote literacy and the love of learning. Books may be dropped of at any advising center location: Academic Success Center, Business BEH-100, Education CEB-221, Engineering TBE-A 207, Fine Arts CDC-2 215, Health Sciences CEB-399, Honors LLB-3270, Hotel BEH-543, Liberal Arts WRI-B 131, Sciences MPE-130, Urban Affairs GUA-4160. UNLV Chapter 100 of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline academic honor society, held its 2013 Induction Ceremony on Monday, April 22, in the Student Union Ballroom. UNLV’s Chapter 100 welcomed approximately 200 students, faculty and staff members into the prestigious society.

Casey Eade was named the junior initiate with the highest grade point average and will serve on the Chapter 100 board. Three students – Marina Manakova, Jean Norman, and Kristen Tardio — were recognized for their volunteerism and service to the chapter.

Distinguished Member status was bestowed on Michael Bowers, Professor of Political Science, for his past leadership and support of Chapter 100. Two outstanding UNLV alumni, Lori Marrs and Patrick Smith were inducted into the chapter. Marrs is the founder and managing partner of Marrs Bergquist CPAs. She has been a licensed certified public accountant since 1989. Smith, in addition to being a trusted adviser to government officials and business leaders throughout Nevada, held several key CSUN positions and was the founding president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity while a student at UNLV.

Phi Kappa Phi’s Spring Member Showcase Lecture and Mixer will be held on Thursday, March 7 in the Barrick Museum Auditorium. Vice Provost Gregory Brown’s lecture, “Inside Looking Outside in Revolutionary Paris” examines genteel housing, landscape gardens, and the imagining of urban exterior space. Brown received his Ph.D. in European history from Columbia University, with a specialization in French cultural and intellectual history. He has taught at Columbia, Hunter College, and George Mason University, as well as at UNLV. Prior to the lecture, Phi Kappa Phi is hosting a “Mix and Mingle” session, which includes light refreshments, prize drawings, and a book drive for Better World Books. All types of books are accepted including: biographies and autobiographies, education, fiction and classic literature, self-help, romance, religion, politics and current events, and more.

The mixer starts at 2:30 p.m., the lecture at 3:30 p.m.
